Windows Explorer has a useful, but hidden method for mass-renaming your files. I just discovered it earlier today through a quick Google search, and thought it was worthy of sharing here.
Below is an example list of files that you might want to rename to something more manageable:
Renaming them all at once is as simple as selecting the files that you want to rename, and then using the "Rename" option on the first file in the list:
Upon pressing Enter to confirm the new name, every other file is also affected, with unique numbers appended to the end:
Check the source link for a few more powerful methods of renaming files (through Command Prompt and PowerShell). I've listed the simplest method above, as this was enough to suit my needs today.

I have no windows 8 … :(
But I like "Ant renamer" (http://www.antp.be/software/renamer/download)
it is free and wonderfull working, but only on win XP , Vista and 7.
I use it to rename my single different fotos in a running sequence to import it into "virtual dub mod" to make a movie(avi) with them.

Hi Helmuti,
Main reason I suggested the solution above was that it was something already built into Windows. I didn't want to download and install something just for this once-off task, and was glad to see that there was already a feature that suited my needs built into the OS.
Using "Ant Renamer" is probably a good idea if you need to do that kind of thing often, as I'm assuming it's much more powerful. Thanks for sharing the link! ;-)

I just noticed that you said that. It works on Windows 7 as well! :)

Almost 4 years later… I am using a Macbook at the moment and need a solution for that. Time to do some investigation & then create a new blog post, I think :)
