Earlier today I needed to find the main executable file for the Google Chrome browser on my machine, but it was not in the usual place.

I am running a 64-bit version of Windows 8, so I have two Program Files folders — one for native 64-bit applications, and one for those still running in 32-bit mode (x86). Google Chrome's install directory was not located in either of those locations.

Eventually, I found it in my AppData folder instead. This is a hidden folder that is located in each user's directory.

C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome

And for those that are still clinging desperately to Windows XP, look in this directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome

By default, Windows does not display any hidden files or folders in Explorer. So unless you have enabled this, you will not be able to find the Google Chrome install directory just by using the GUI.

The solution: Copy the first directory path to your clipboard, and paste it into Explorer's navigation bar. Change "YourName" to your account name, then press Enter. You will be taken straight to the directory that you are looking for.

Or even use the + R command to bring up the Run window.

Yes, you could also access the folder using the Run dialog. Copy the directory path and paste it into the Run dialog instead of Windows Explorer.

Out of curiosity, why did you need to access the executable file?

If I remember, I'll be sure to let you know ;-) I think it was something minor, but the task took longer than expected as I was looking in the wrong place.
